Bad breath, or halitosis, can be embarrassing, but it is common and often treatable. In most cases, the cause is in the mouth itself.
Common Causes
- Bacteria on the tongue and between teeth.
- Gum disease and tartar build-up.
- Cavities and old, leaking fillings.
- Dry mouth, tobacco, or strong foods like onion and garlic.
- Less often, sinus, throat or digestive issues.
What Helps
- Brush twice a day and floss daily.
- Gently clean your tongue with a scraper or brush.
- Drink water through the day to prevent dryness.
- Clean dentures thoroughly and remove them at night.
- Quit tobacco.
Mouthwash: Helpful or Not?
Mouthwash can freshen breath temporarily but does not fix the underlying cause. Use it as an add-on, not a replacement for brushing and flossing.
When to See a Dentist
If bad breath continues despite good cleaning, a dental check-up can find hidden causes such as gum disease or decay. If the mouth is healthy, your dentist may suggest checking with a physician.
