Dental implants can last for many years, but only if the gums and bone around them stay healthy. Good care both after surgery and in the long run makes all the difference.
Right After Surgery
- Follow the medicines and instructions given by your dentist.
- Use a cold pack on the cheek to ease swelling in the first day.
- Eat soft, lukewarm foods and avoid chewing on the surgical side.
- Avoid smoking, and avoid touching the area with fingers or tongue.
- Keep the rest of your mouth clean and rinse gently as advised.
Daily Cleaning
Brush your implant like a natural tooth, twice a day, and clean around it carefully. Interdental brushes or a water flosser can help clean the areas where the crown meets the gum.
Risks to Watch For
Gum infection around an implant (peri-implant disease) can cause bleeding, swelling and eventually bone loss. Smoking and poorly controlled diabetes increase this risk.
Check-Ups Are Essential
Visit your dentist for regular reviews and cleanings so the implant, crown and bone can be monitored. Report any looseness, pain or swelling early.
