With so many options on the shelf, choosing a toothbrush and toothpaste can feel confusing. The good news is that a few simple rules cover most people.
Toothbrush
- Choose soft bristles - harder bristles can damage gums and enamel.
- A small head reaches back teeth more easily.
- Replace it every three months, or sooner if bristles fray.
- Electric brushes can help people who struggle with technique, but a manual brush used well is fine.
Toothpaste
- Look for a fluoride toothpaste, which helps strengthen enamel and prevent cavities.
- Sensitive teeth: choose a formula made for sensitivity.
- Be cautious with highly abrasive whitening pastes for daily use.
- Children should use a child-appropriate amount and be supervised.
Technique Matters
- Brush for two minutes, twice a day.
- Angle the bristles toward the gum line.
- Use gentle circular motions and avoid scrubbing hard.
- Clean all surfaces, and your tongue too.
Do Not Forget
Floss or use interdental brushes daily, because a brush cannot reach between teeth. People with braces or implants can ask us for tailored tools.
