Your Child's First Dental Visit: A Parent's Guide

← Back to Blog

A child's first trip to the dentist sets the tone for how they'll feel about dental care for years to come. A little preparation goes a long way toward making it a positive experience.

When Should the First Visit Happen?

Most dental associations recommend scheduling the first visit by your child's first birthday, or within six months of their first tooth appearing - whichever comes first. Early visits let the dentist monitor development and catch issues before they become bigger problems.

What Happens at the First Appointment

Tips to Ease Nerves

Use positive, simple language rather than words like "pain" or "shot." Reading a book about visiting the dentist beforehand, or letting your child watch a sibling's appointment, can also help build familiarity and confidence.

Building a Routine

Regular check-ups every six months help children get comfortable with the clinic environment over time, making future visits - including any necessary treatment - far less stressful.

Caring for Teeth at Home

Start brushing as soon as the first tooth appears, using a rice-grain-sized amount of fluoride toothpaste for toddlers. Supervise brushing until your child can reliably do it well on their own, usually around age 6-8.
