Many parents wonder when the right time for braces is. The answer depends on the child, which is why an orthodontic assessment matters more than a fixed age.
The First Orthodontic Check
Many orthodontists suggest a first evaluation around age 7, when the first permanent teeth appear. This does not mean braces start then - it means problems can be spotted early.
Signs Your Child May Need an Evaluation
- Crowded, crooked or protruding teeth.
- Difficulty biting or chewing.
- Thumb sucking or mouth breathing that continues at an older age.
- Jaws that look misaligned, or a bite that does not meet properly.
- Baby teeth lost very early or very late.
Early vs Later Treatment
Some problems, such as jaw growth issues, can be guided while the child is still growing. For many children, full braces are most effective once most permanent teeth have come in, often between ages 11 and 14.
Is It Ever Too Late?
No. Adults can get braces or clear aligners too, as long as teeth and gums are healthy.
